Abstract

The ability to read Arabic texts is a fundamental competency in Arabic language learning and in understanding Islamic sources. However, students in Islamic-based general secondary schools, particularly senior high schools, continue to face complex reading difficulties that have not been extensively explored. This study aims to describe the problems in Arabic text reading skills, their causal factors, and the efforts to overcome them among eleventh-grade students at Muhammadiyah Pinrang Senior High School. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a case study design. The research participants consisted of 16 eleventh-grade students, with supporting informants including the Arabic language teacher, the vice principal for curriculum affairs, and the principal. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings revealed that the linguistic problems included difficulties in recognizing Hijaiyyah letters, pronunciation errors, limited vocabulary mastery, and difficulties in understanding reading texts. Meanwhile, the non-linguistic problems included shyness and lack of self-confidence when reading, lack of focus and attention, and low participation in reading activities. Internal factors included low learning motivation, poor reading habits, and differences in students’ basic reading abilities. External factors included the teacher’s educational background not being in Arabic language studies, limited instructional time, inadequate learning facilities, and the ineffective implementation of the Arabic language habituation program. This study recommends integrated interventions, including reactivating the Arabic language habituation program, providing textbooks, conducting gradual reading exercises to strengthen mastery of Hijaiyyah letters and makhraj, implementing peer tutoring, enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery, and providing motivation and support. The study contributes to the understanding of Arabic reading problems in the senior high school context, which differs structurally from madrasah aliyah, and proposes pedagogical, psychological, and institutional intervention frameworks.

Abstract

This study examines how students in Arabic Language Education program uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support Arabic language learning. Specifically, it explores students’ AI usage patterns, learning purposes, perceived benefits, and overall perceptions of AI-assisted Arabic language learning. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving 89 students from several universities in Indonesia. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using a Likert-scale instrument and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including percentages and mean scores. The findings reveal that students reported a moderate level of AI use in Arabic language learning (M = 3.20), particularly for information searching (M = 3.53), text translation (M = 3.43), and vocabulary comprehension (M = 3.44). Students also perceived AI as useful, practical, and easy to use in supporting learning activities. Furthermore, AI was considered beneficial in improving learning efficiency, facilitating independent learning, and helping students understand difficult materials. However, students expressed concerns regarding the accuracy of AI-generated information and the potential risk of overdependence on technology. The findings indicate that AI has become an important supporting tool in Arabic language learning, although its use still requires critical awareness and academic supervision. While previous studies have mainly focused on AI effectiveness, technology acceptance, or specific applications in language learning, this study provides a comprehensive examination of students’ AI usage patterns, learning purposes, perceived benefits, and perceptions within Arabic language education. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on AI-assisted language learning and offer practical insights for educators and institutions seeking to integrate AI responsibly into Arabic language instruction.

Abstract

This study adopts a quantitative research approach using a meta-analytic method to examine the effectiveness of interactive learning applications in improving students’ Arabic vocabulary mastery. The independent variable is the use of interactive learning applications, while the dependent variable is students’ Arabic vocabulary acquisition. Educational level, class size, and application type were analyzed as moderator variables. The data set consisted of 25 experimental studies published between 2019 and 2025 that met the predetermined inclusion criteria. Data analysis was conducted using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software to calculate the pooled effect size and examine moderator effects. The results indicate a combined effect size of 0.86, categorized as large, with effect sizes ranging from 0.245 to 2.772, most of which fall within the large to very large categories. Moderator analysis revealed no statistically significant differences based on educational level, class size, or application type, although higher effectiveness was observed at the junior and senior high school levels and in gamification-based applications. These findings demonstrate that interactive learning applications have a strong and significant impact on Arabic vocabulary acquisition and provide empirical support for their integration into more effective Arabic language learning strategies.

Abstract

Arabic language in Indonesia faces a profound epistemological crisis: it is simultaneously treated as an Instrumental Discipline (ilmu alat) to access Islamic texts and as an Autonomous Discipline (ilmu tujuan) worthy of study in its own right. This study critically examines this identity crisis through the lenses of Islamic educational epistemology, curriculum theory, and the sociology of knowledge. Employing critical library research methodology, the study analyzes the historical trajectory of Arabic language instruction in Indonesian Islamic educational institutions from pesantren traditions to state madrasah systems and identifies three core tensions: (1) the reduction of Arabic to a grammatical prerequisite rather than a living intellectual tradition; (2) the institutional fragmentation between ilmu alat and ilmu tujuan orientations across different types of educational institutions; and (3) the absence of a coherent national epistemological framework for Arabic language education. Drawing on key Indonesian scholars including Aziz Fachrurrozi, Acep Hermawan, Ahmad Fuad Effendy, and Amin Abdullah, as well as classical Islamic scholarship, this article proposes a reconceptualization of Arabic language identity in Indonesia through what is termed "Epistemological Integration" an approach that transcends the Instrumental Discipline/Autonomous Discipline binary by repositioning Arabic as both civilizational archive and living intellectual medium. The findings carry significant implications for curriculum policy, teacher education, and the institutional reform of Arabic language education in Indonesian Islamic schools and universities.
