Abstract

Galangal rhizome (Kaempferia galanga L.) is known to contain flavonoids and ethyl p-methoxycinnamate compounds that have natural anti-inflammatory activity. To increase the effectiveness of its topical use, galangal extract needs to be formulated in the form of an ointment. This study aims to formulate 70% ethanol extract of galangal rhizome into ointment preparations with varying concentrations and evaluate its physical properties to ensure stability and comfort of use. Galangal rhizome was extracted using a maceration method with 70% ethanol as a solvent. The thick extract obtained was formulated into an ointment preparation with a hydrocarbon base (vaseline album and adeps lanae) in three different concentrations (e.g.: 5%, 10%, and 15%). Physical evaluation of the preparation includes organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, pH value measurements, spreadability tests, and adhesion tests. The results showed that all ointment formulas met the physical quality requirements. Organoleptically, the ointment is yellow-brown to dark brown in color with a distinctive kencur aroma. The preparation is homogeneous, has a pH value that matches skin pH (4.5–6.5), and exhibits stable spreadability and adhesion during storage. Increasing the extract concentration tends to affect the consistency and color intensity of the preparation. A 70% ethanol extract of kencur rhizome can be formulated into an ointment preparation that meets physical evaluation requirements and has potential as an alternative topical anti-inflammatory treatment.
