Abstract

Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer in the world, producing abundant waste of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB) which is rich in phenolic compounds that have the potential as a source of antioxidants. This study aims to identify and determine the total phenolic content in OPEFB extract, oil phase, and OPEFB water phase. OPEFB samples from the tankos hopper and OPEFB oil from the bunch press output were taken from the Tasik Raja PKS PT. AEP. This study used a descriptive experimental method with qualitative tests of phenolic compounds and quantitative tests using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 756 nm. The qualitative test results showed that all samples were positive for containing phenolic compounds with a reaction of Blackish Green and Yellow-Orange color changes. The highest total phenolic content was found in the OPEFB extract with an average of 133.0 mg/L GAE, followed by the water phase (82.4 mg/L GAE) and the oil phase (76.9 mg/L GAE). These values are significantly higher than the phenolic content in oil palm fruit (1.46 mg/L). This study demonstrates that phenolic compounds in OPEFB and OPEFB oil are higher than those in oil palm fruit, making them suitable sources of antioxidants.
