Abstract

Depression in acute coronary syndrome ACS has a fatal impact on patients, especially worsening infarction and increasing morbidity and mortality. The incidence of depression during the acute phase of ACS is high, and spiritual well-being is believed to prevent depression. This study examines the relationship between spiritual well-being and depression levels among ACS patients treated in a cardiac intensive care unit at a referral hospital in Bandung City. This quantitative study used a correlation analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of ACS patients receiving treatment in the cardiac intensive care unit at a referral hospital in Bandung City during January and February 2020. A total of 84 respondents were selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected using the spiritual well-being scale and the cardiac depression scale, and then analyzed using the Pearson correlation test, as both variables were normally distributed. There was a significant negative correlation between spiritual well-being and depression levels among ACS patients in the cardiac intensive care unit (p<0.01, r=−0.629). In conclusion, the higher the spiritual well-being, the lower the depression experienced by patients, and vice versa. Further studies are recommended to analyze multivariate factors influencing depression in ACS patients during the acute phase.
