Abstract

This community service program focuses on providing child-friendly literacy facilities through the establishment of a mini library in Lambaro Seubun Village, Aceh Besar. The main issues identified include limited access to permanent reading spaces, insufficient children’s reading materials, and the absence of community-based literacy structures. The program utilized a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving children aged 6–12 years, village officials, parents, local youth, and community volunteers. Program stages consisted of a community needs assessment, participatory action planning, and technical implementation including room renovation, interior arrangement, and the provision of children’s reading collections. The program resulted in the establishment of the LBS UNIDA Mini Library as a new literacy space that is more structured, safe, and engaging. Beyond physical improvements, the program also generated social transformation marked by increased community involvement, the emergence of local volunteers, and a growing sense of ownership toward the literacy facility. These findings reinforce the concept that a supportive print-rich environment and active community participation are key factors in strengthening children’s literacy in rural areas. The program demonstrates that mini library initiatives can serve as simple, relevant, and sustainable community-based literacy interventions for enhancing reading culture in Aceh.
