Abstract

This article examines the role of elderly women (grannies) or female elders in transmitting gender values and social reproduction in Nisam District, North Aceh. In Aceh's religious and deeply rooted society, elderly women play a central role as guardians of values, caregivers, and intergenerational socio-cultural agents. Using an ethnographic approach, this study examines the daily interactions between grandmothers and grandchildren in multigenerational families. Data were obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and narrative documentation. The results show that elderly women not only reproduce traditional gender values such as obedience and gentleness for women, and responsibility and leadership for men, but also act as adaptive agents capable of reinterpreting these values in line with social change. Their role as cultural brokers positions elderly women as a bridge between traditional values and modernity, thus contributing to the sustainability of Acehnese cultural identity amidst globalization.
