Abstract

This study aimed to synthesize and characterize nitrogen-doped carbon dots (C-dots) derived from guava leaves (Psidium guajava L.) and evaluate their potential as a fluorescent sensor for Fe(III) detection. Nitrogen-doped C-dots were synthesized via pyrolysis at different temperatures using urea as the nitrogen dopant. The synthesized C-dots were characterized for their optical properties, surface functional groups, particle size distribution, and fluorescence under 365 nm UV irradiation. The results confirmed the successful formation of nanoscale C-dots bearing hydroxyl (–OH), carboxyl (–COOH), and amino (–NH) functional groups that contribute to their fluorescence properties. The synthesis temperature significantly affected the optical characteristics and fluorescence intensity of the C-dots, with the sample prepared at 250 °C exhibiting the highest fluorescence intensity and a strong blue emission. Fluorescence sensing experiments demonstrated that Fe(III) induced greater fluorescence quenching than the other tested metal ions, indicating good selectivity toward Fe(III). These findings demonstrate that nitrogen-doped guava leaf-derived C-dots are promising as a simple, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective fluorescent sensors for Fe(III) detection in aqueous samples.
