Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of spiritual leadership on teachers’ organizational commitment in salaf Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren salaf). A quantitative correlational research design was employed involving 124 teachers from four salaf Islamic boarding schools. Data were collected using structured questionnaires measuring spiritual leadership and organizational commitment, with instrument validity and reliability confirmed prior to analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The findings revealed that spiritual leadership has a positive and significant effect on teachers’ organizational commitment. Leadership characterized by a clear vision, faith, altruistic love, exemplary behavior, and spiritual values enhances teachers’ emotional attachment, loyalty, and sense of responsibility toward their institutions. The unique religious culture of salaf Islamic boarding schools further strengthens the relationship between spiritual leadership and organizational commitment by fostering a sense of calling, belonging, and dedication among teachers. These findings support Louis W. Fry’s Spiritual Leadership Theory while extending its application to the context of Islamic boarding schools. The study implies that strengthening spiritual leadership practices can serve as an effective strategy for enhancing teachers’ organizational commitment, improving institutional effectiveness, and promoting sustainable quality development in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of character education based on religious school culture in Integrated Islamic Elementary Schools (Sekolah Dasar Islam Terpadu/SDIT) in Pekanbaru City. The study employed a qualitative case study approach involving school principals, vice principals, teachers, parents, and students. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, comprising data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that character education is systematically implemented through strategic planning, Islamic values integration into the curriculum, religious habituation, teacher role modeling, classroom instruction, and extracurricular activities. Character development is evaluated through behavioral observations, reflective journals, attitude assessments, and collaboration with parents. Implementation is supported by visionary leadership, a strong religious school culture, committed teachers, and active parental involvement. However, digital media influence and inconsistencies in family parenting practices remain significant challenges. The study proposes an integrative model emphasizing synergy among school leadership, organizational culture, curriculum integration, religious habituation, and family engagement.
