Abstract

This article examines the urgency of Islamic eco-theology as a response to the global climate crisis by analyzing Quranic verses through maqashidi (purposive) and thematic (maudhu’i) exegesis approaches. It connects these insights with the views of classical scholars like Ibn Khaldun and contemporary figures such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi to strengthen the theological and ethical foundations for addressing the crisis. The climate crisis—driven by human activities such as the exploitation of nature, carbon emissions, and ecosystem degradation—poses a serious challenge to the Earth's sustainability. From an Islamic perspective, humans, as stewards (*khalifah*) on Earth, bear a moral and spiritual responsibility to maintain environmental balance as part of a divine trust (amanah). Verses such as Surah Al-Baqarah: 30, Al-A’raf: 56, and Al-An’am: 38 underscore the importance of preserving the Earth, rejecting environmental destruction, and recognizing the equality of all beings as part of Allah’s creation. The concept of eco-theology integrates spiritual, moral, and social values in addressing the climate crisis—incorporating principles of justice (al-‘adalah) and balance (al-tawazun)—while encouraging a shift toward more environmentally friendly lifestyles. Thus, eco-theology serves not merely as a theological narrative but also as a concrete strategy for advocacy, education, and the transformation of human behavior in the preservation of the environment
