Abstract

Anxiety among pregnant women undergoing pre-caesarean section is a common psychological response. However, when anxiety becomes excessive and is not adequately managed, it may negatively affect both physical and psychological well-being. Independent nursing interventions, such as distraction techniques and relaxation techniques, can be implemented to address this problem. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Squishy Finger Hold Therapy distraction-relaxation technique on reducing anxiety in pregnant women before caesarean section. This study employed a quantitative pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sampling technique was accidental sampling, involving 29 respondents. Anxiety levels were measured using the Anxiety Assessment Scale for Pregnant Women in Labor (AASPWL). Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that before treatment, the majority of pregnant women (56.6%) experienced anxiety; after treatment, nearly all pregnant women (80.0%) experienced moderate anxiety. Statistical analysis showed that the “squishy finger hold” relaxation and distraction technique was effective in reducing anxiety (p-value = 0.002). It is recommended that future studies apply similar techniques to other patients prior to surgery, such as preoperative laparotomy and other procedures.
