Abstract

Teenagers are an age group that undergoes significant physiological and hormonal changes, including in reproductive health. One important indicator of reproductive health is the regularity of the menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle disorders are quite high among teenagers in Indonesia, and one of the factors affecting it is nutritional status. This study aims to find out the relationship between nutritional status and the menstrual cycle in female teenagers at MA Putri PUI Talaga, Majalengka Regency. The research is quantitative analytical with a cross-sectional approach, conducted on February 11, 2025, involving 305 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data was collected through Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements and questionnaires related to the menstrual cycle. Data analysis using the Chi-Square test showed that the majority of respondents had a normal nutritional status (66.6%), followed by overweight (17.0%) and underweight (16.4%). About 50.5% of respondents had regular menstrual cycles, while 49.5% had irregular cycles. The Chi-Square test results showed a significant relationship between nutritional status and the regularity of the menstrual cycle (p = 0.007), so it can be concluded that nutritional status affects menstrual cycle regularity in adolescent girls, and there is a significant relationship between nutritional status and menstrual cycle regularity in adolescents. The recommendations from this study are expected to serve as guidance for health workers, schools, and teenagers to pay more attention to nutritional status to support reproductive health.   Teenagers are an age group that undergoes significant physiological and hormonal changes, including in reproductive health. Abstract

Menstrual cycle regularity is an important indicator of adolescent reproductive health and may be influenced by nutritional status. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nutritional status and menstrual cycle among adolescent girls at MTs Putri PUI Majalengka in 2026. This quantitative analytical study used a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 154 female students, with 60 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Nutritional status was assessed using body weight and height measurements and classified according to Body Mass Index-for-Age (BMI/A) based on the 2020 Indonesian Ministry of Health anthropometric standards. Menstrual cycle data were obtained using a menstrual diary questionnaire and classified according to adolescent menstrual-cycle criteria. Data were analyzed using frequency distributions and Chi-Square testing at α=0.05. Of 60 respondents, 38 (63.3%) had normal nutritional status, while 22 (36.7%) had non-normal status. Forty respondents (66.7%) had regular menstrual cycles and 20 (33.3%) had irregular cycles. Among respondents with normal nutritional status, 35 (92.1%) had regular cycles, whereas among those with non-normal nutritional status, 17 (77.3%) had irregular cycles. The Chi-Square test yielded p=0.000 (p<0.05), indicating a significant relationship between nutritional status and menstrual cycle. Schools should strengthen nutritional education, periodic anthropometric monitoring, reproductive-health counseling, and menstrual-cycle recording.
