Abstract

This study investigates the ethnophysics inherent in the Bale Adat (traditional house) and Lumbung Padi (rice barn) of the Sasak community in Sade Traditional Village, Central Lombok, with particular emphasis on heat and air circulation within traditional architectural practices. A qualitative, ethnographic methodology was utilized, incorporating direct observation, semi-structured interviews with three purposively selected informants, documentation, and literature review. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with credibility established through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that Bale Adat and Lumbung Padi maintain their original forms, functions, spatial arrangements, and use of natural materials such as thatch, bamboo, wood, clay, rice husk, and cattle dung. These materials minimize heat conduction and help maintain cool, stable indoor temperatures despite high external heat. Natural air circulation occurs through gaps in the bamboo weave, the wall-roof junction, and the barn's elevated stilt structure, ensuring stored rice remains dry. The results underscore a strong connection between Sasak local wisdom and the physics principles of heat transfer and fluid dynamics, highlighting the potential of Bale Adat and Lumbung Padi as contextual, ethnophysics-based resources for physics education.
