Abstract

This study aims to describe language variation, diglossia, and the use of language codes in interactions among members of SMP Negeri 1 Kunduran. It employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on theories of language variation, diglossia, and restricted and elaborated codes. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and conversation documentation, and then analyzed through reduction, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that language variation is influenced by social factors such as social class, age, gender, group identity, and communication context. A diglossic pattern is also identified, with Indonesian functioning as the high variety in formal situations and Javanese as the low variety in informal communication. In addition, restricted codes are used in casual interactions, while elaborated codes appear in formal classroom communication. These findings confirm that language use in schools is dynamic and context-dependent.
