Abstract

Listening skill (maharah istima’) is one of the fundamental skills in Arabic language learning. However, conventional learning methods often make students less active and cause difficulties in understanding the material. Therefore, a more interactive learning method is needed, one of which is Total Physical Response, a method that integrates language with physical movement. This study aims to determine students’ responses toward the implementation of the Total Physical Response method and its effectiveness in improving the listening skills of fifth-grade students at MIS NU 3 Pontianak. This research employed a quantitative approach using a one group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 31 students of class V-B at MIS NU 3 Pontianak. Data collection techniques included questionnaires, tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and inferentially using the paired sample t-test. The results showed that students’ responses toward the TPR method were categorized as very good, with a percentage of 86.64%. In addition, the average pretest score of 64.68 increased to 80.48 in the posttest. The hypothesis test results showed a significance value of 0.000 (Sig < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results. Therefore, the Total Physical Response (TPR) method is effective in improving students’ listening skills (maharah istima’) and creating a more active and enjoyable Arabic learning environment
