Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of parenting carried out by parents with special needs who are deaf towards hearing children or Children of Deaf Adults (CODA), especially in developing the child's communication, social, and emotional abilities. The difference in language modalities between children and parents will create unique parenting dynamics and will face challenges in everyday life. This study aims to identify the types of parenting patterns used, the strategies, and the challenges faced by parents in developing communication, social, and emotional abilities. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method in Limo District, Depok City. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation of research subjects selected purposively. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Research results show that the parenting style applied by parents tends to lean towards democratic and authoritarian styles. Parents provide clear rules and boundaries accompanied by warmth, attention, and opportunities for children to express themselves. Strategies for developing children's communication skills involve using multimodal communication and visual media such as sign language, pictures, videos, real objects, as well as assistance from a third party as a communication intermediary. The development of social skills is carried out by providing examples of behavior and interaction, while the development of emotional skills is done through exercises in recognizing basic emotions and simple emotion regulation exercises. In the parenting process, parents also face challenges such as communication barriers, social stigma, limited social support, family economic factors, as well as the child's emotional burden as a mediator of communication within the family.
