Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine how the values of honesty and scientific responsibility are conceptualized in the scientific ethics literature, identify the most frequently discussed forms of ethical violations, and analyze the relevance of these values in addressing such violations. A systematic literature review was conducted by collecting and selecting peer-reviewed journal articles from Google Scholar based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, covering publications directly relevant to scientific ethics, academic honesty, and research integrity. The selected literature was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify major patterns and themes related to the research questions. The findings reveal that honesty and scientific responsibility are consistently positioned as the core values of scientific ethics. Honesty is understood as a commitment to originality, truthfulness in data presentation, and proper acknowledgment of sources, while scientific responsibility refers to moral and academic accountability in conducting and reporting research. The review further identifies plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification as the most frequently discussed forms of misconduct, followed by data manipulation, conflicts of interest, and other academic violations. Honesty and scientific responsibility are highly relevant in preventing and responding to ethical violations, functioning as moral safeguards, guiding ethical conduct, and supporting the development of an integrity-based academic culture. These findings underscore the need to strengthen scientific ethics through education, institutional policies, and the cultivation of ethical values in higher education and research environments.
