Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of code mixing and the factors influencing the occurrence of code mixing in the use of the Ketapang Malay dialect among students at Universitas PGRI Pontianak. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data consisted of students’ utterances collected through participant observation, recording, and note-taking techniques using recording devices and field notes as instruments. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested through source and technique triangulation. The results showed that there were three forms of code mixing used by students, namely inner code mixing, outer code mixing, and hybrid code mixing. Inner code mixing was the most dominant form found in students’ conversations. Code mixing occurred in the form of words, phrases, and clauses that appeared spontaneously in daily communication. The factors influencing code mixing included language habits, social environment, communication situations, discussion topics, language practicality, social identity, and the influence of globalization. The use of code mixing indicates that students possess bilingual and multilingual abilities influenced by social and academic environments.
