Abstract

Science education in elementary schools plays a crucial role in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding and scientific process skills. However, science instruction that remains centered on conventional methods and fails to make optimal use of the environment results in low student engagement and understanding of the material. This study aims to analyze the utilization of the surrounding environment as a natural laboratory in science education at the elementary school level. The method used was a systematic literature review, examining 10 relevant scientific articles from 2022 to 2026 obtained through Google Scholar. The results indicate that utilizing the environment as a natural laboratory can enhance students’ motivation, engagement, curiosity, critical and creative thinking skills, as well as their scientific process skills. Furthermore, this approach also contributes to improved conceptual understanding, learning outcomes, and students’ science literacy. Thus, the utilization of the environment holds great potential as an effective, contextual, and meaningful learning strategy in elementary school science education.
