Abstract

Marriage in Islam is a sacred bond (mitsaqan ghalidzan) aimed at establishing a harmonious family characterized by sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah. However, among Javanese communities, the tradition of calculating weton remains a consideration in determining marital compatibility. This tradition is still practiced by the people of Cukir Village, Diwek District, Jombang Regency, leading to diverse perspectives among religious leaders. This study aims to examine the views of religious leaders regarding marriages based on weton calculations and to explore their role in managing differing opinions within the community. The research employed a qualitative approach using field research methods. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive analysis model developed by Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that religious leaders' perspectives can be categorized into three groups: those who reject the practice of weton as contrary to Islamic creed, those who accept it as a cultural tradition under certain limitations, and those who adopt a moderate stance by viewing weton as a tradition that should not be regarded as an absolute determinant. Religious leaders play a significant role as spiritual guides, social mediators, and guardians of harmony between Islamic teachings and local traditions.
