Abstract

This study examines how local knowledge is represented in the Situjuah palm sugar visual storytelling brandbook and how it can function as a contextual learning medium for art, culture, and creative entrepreneurship education. The study responds to the limited availability of systematic visual teaching media that connect classroom learning with students’ sociocultural environment. Using educational design research supported by a design thinking framework, the study involved field observation, semi-structured interviews, photographic documentation, visual artifact analysis, expert validation, and limited user testing. The findings show that the brandbook represents local knowledge through three interconnected layers: production practices, cultural place, and visual identity. Documentary photography, natural color systems, typography, layout, narrative sequence, and supporting media transform palm sugar production from oral and community-based practice into a structured learning artifact. The brandbook offers pedagogical potential by helping students interpret cultural symbols, understand material practices, develop visual literacy, and examine how local resources can be translated into creative value. This study contributes to educational research by repositioning the brandbook from a promotional tool into a pedagogical artifact for integrating local knowledge, cultural learning, and creative entrepreneurship
