Abstract

This study aimed to describe the emotional development of adolescents experiencing parental divorce in Bernai Village, Sarolangun Regency. Parental divorce is one of the family crises that may influence adolescents’ emotional development and adjustment processes. This research employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method. The participants consisted of two adolescents who had experienced parental divorce and several supporting informants, including parents, peers, and a school counselor. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Source triangulation was used to ensure data validity. The findings revealed five major themes: emotional instability, peer support, family relationships and emotional support, emotional expression, and emotional regulation. Adolescents experienced sadness, disappointment, anger, loneliness, and loss following their parents’ divorce. However, support from peers and family members contributed positively to their emotional adjustment. Over time, participants demonstrated improved abilities to express and regulate their emotions. The study concludes that emotional development after parental divorce is a dynamic process influenced by social support and individual adaptation. These findings provide implications for guidance and counseling services in assisting adolescents experiencing parental divorce.
