Abstract

News articles on bundesliga.com contain terms from English amid the use of German as the language of writing. This study aims to describe the borrowed register of Bundesliga news discourse from a sociolinguistic perspective through analysis of the positional distribution, structural forms, and communicative functions of Anglicisms. Using qualitative descriptive methods and discourse analysis, Anglicism units were identified and categorized. Anglicisms appear frequently in headlines and leads while absent from narrative body text. This pattern reflects how Bundesliga news texts work: headlines and leads carry the most important information and demand words with dense meaning. Direct borrowings tend to appear in headlines because they are not changed from their original form, while hybrid formations are distributed across headlines and leads because they are combined with German words. This difference in form relates directly to function: direct borrowings tend to carry stylistic functions, while hybrid formations tend to carry referential functions. These findings define the borrowed register of Bundesliga news discourse as a word choice that is sociolinguistically shaped by the conditions of the professional football industry domain, not by coincidence.
