<![CDATA[This study aims to determine the relationship between mastery of news text structure and linguistic features with the ability to write news texts among seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Medan in the 2025/2026 academic year. This research employed a quantitative approach using a correlational design. The population consisted of all seventh-grade students totaling 320 students, while the sample was 32 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using tests of news text structure mastery, linguistic feature mastery, and news text writing ability. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, multiple linear regression analysis, coefficient of determination, and hypothesis testing. The results showed that students’ mastery of news text structure was categorized as fairly good with a mean score of 14.97, mastery of linguistic features was fairly good with a mean score of 14.31, and news text writing ability was categorized as good with a mean score of 73.19. Multiple regression analysis indicated that mastery of news text structure and linguistic features had a positive relationship with students’ news text writing ability. Simultaneously, both variables showed a significant relationship with news text writing ability, with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05). The coefficient of determination revealed that both independent variables contributed 7.3% to students’ news text writing ability, while the remaining 92.7% was influenced by other factors. Therefore, mastery of structure and linguistic features remains an important foundation for improving students’ ability to write news texts.]]>
