Abstract

Coal is one of the most widely transported dry bulk commodities in Indonesia, requiring proper cargo hold preparation to maintain cargo quality and ensure operational efficiency. Inadequate cargo hold preparation may lead to cargo contamination, loading delays, increased operational costs, and reduced ship productivity. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of cargo hold preparation procedures, identify the obstacles encountered during the preparation process, and determine the efforts made to overcome these obstacles on board MV. Kartini Samudra. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews with the Chief Officer and Boatswain, documentation, and literature review during the author's sea practice aboard MV. Kartini Samudra. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that cargo hold preparation generally followed the company's Standard Operating Procedures and the requirements of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code. However, several obstacles were identified, including limited preparation time due to short voyage schedules, leakage in the hatch cover hydraulic system, delays in spare part delivery, and suboptimal supervision during cargo hold inspection. These constraints potentially delayed loading operations and reduced operational efficiency. Therefore, improving planned maintenance, strengthening crew supervision, enhancing coordination among deck officers, and implementing routine evaluations of cargo hold readiness are essential to support safe and efficient loading operations.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the duty officer’s (mualim jaga) responsibility during cargo loading and unloading operations on board the container vessel MV. Sunny Laurel. The objective of this research is to determine how watchkeeping duties are carried out during port operations and to identify the factors causing the vessel to experience a list during discharging activity. A qualitative descriptive method was applied through direct observation and interviews with an Able Seaman, Second Officer, Third Officer, and Chief Officer during the author’s sea practice period from July 2024 to July 2025, supported by documentation and relevant literature. The results indicate that the list of MV. Sunny Laurel, which reached 5 degrees at Hai Phong Port on 30 April 2025, was caused by insufficient supervision of the duty officer over the unbalanced discharging sequence between the port and starboard sides, weak coordination with the shore foreman, and the absence of periodic checks on the lashing equipment and draft marks. These findings confirm that the human factor, particularly discipline and consistency in performing watchkeeping duties in accordance with the STCW and CSS Code provisions, remains the dominant factor in maintaining stability and safety during cargo operations.

Abstract

This article examines the operational constraints encountered during beaching maneuvers performed by LCT Sanjaya 01 and the countermeasures taken to address them. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied, combining interviews with the master and chief officer, field observation of the beaching process, documentary study of ship records, and a review of relevant literature. Data were processed through condensation, structured presentation, and conclusion verification. The results indicate that delays and disturbances in beaching operations stem from three interrelated sources: crew readiness, the technical condition of mooring and ramp equipment, and environmental dynamics such as current, wind, wave direction, and water depth at the beaching point. A notable case occurred at Jetty Suaran, where a strong river current combined with heavy rain and gusting wind caused the forward mooring line to part during the approach phase. Mitigation measures identified include crew selection and familiarization briefings, scheduled maintenance of the winch, wire rope, and ramp door, and closer coordination between deck and engine departments supported by structured safety meetings and VHF communication protocols. The study concludes that successful beaching depends on the integrated management of vessel readiness, environmental assessment, and human competence

Abstract

Watchkeeping duties plays an important role in ensuring navigational safety, particularly when a vessel encounters adverse weather conditions that can reduce visibility and affect ship stability. However, based on observations conducted on board MV. OPS ASTRID, the implementation of sea watchkeeping still faces several challenges, including an unbalanced watch schedule due to a limited number of officers and less optimal coordination between the bridge and the deck during extreme weather conditions. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the implementation of sea watchkeeping and identify the problems that arise when the vessel sails under adverse weather conditions. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through direct observation during the voyage, interviews with the Chief Officer, Second Officer, Bosun, and Able Seamen (AB), as well as a literature study referring to the provisions of STCW 2010 and COLREG 1972. The results indicate that sea watchkeeping on board MV. OPS ASTRID has generally been carried out in accordance with navigational safety procedures; however, its effectiveness is influenced by an unbalanced watch schedule and communication constraints between the bridge and the deck caused by adverse weather. These conditions may reduce the effectiveness of navigational supervision, indicating the need for adjustments to the watch schedule, improved communication between watchkeeping positions, and additional supervision to maintain navigational safety.
