Abstract

This study aims to analyze the shift in the meaning of Minangkabau petatah-petitih and its relevance to the ethical development of the younger generation in the modern era. Petatah-petitih is an oral cultural heritage containing moral values, ethics, and life principles that have been passed down through generations in Minangkabau society. However, globalization and advances in information technology have influenced the mindset and behavior of young people, resulting in changes in their understanding and use of petatah-petitih. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach conducted within the Minangkabau community in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Data were collected from traditional leaders, teachers, university students, youth, and various literature related to Minangkabau petatah-petitih. The data collection techniques included interviews, observations, documentation, and literature review, while data analysis involved data reduction, data categorization, systematic presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that petatah-petitih continues to embody essential character values, including honesty, responsibility, discipline, social awareness, religiosity, deliberation, and respect for parents. Nevertheless, its application in everyday life has gradually declined due to weakening intergenerational communication, the dominance of digital media, and changing social lifestyles. This shift has contributed to the decreasing internalization of moral and cultural values among the younger generation. Therefore, revitalizing petatah-petitih through local wisdom-based character education is a strategic effort to strengthen cultural identity while fostering ethical, responsible, and resilient young generations capable of facing the challenges of globalization Keywords: Minangkabau petatah-petitih, local wisdom, character education, youth ethics, globalization.
