Abstract

Student engagement in student organizations represents an important form of non-academic activity that contributes to the development of prospective teachers' soft skills. However, students' initial participation in student organizations remains relatively low. This study aimed to examine the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the initial engagement of Accounting Education students in student organizations. A quantitative survey design was employed involving 184 active students of the Accounting Education Study Program selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed through multiple linear regression. The findings revealed that intrinsic motivation had a positive and significant influence on students' initial engagement. Likewise, extrinsic motivation significantly influenced students' initial engagement. Simultaneously, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation significantly affected students' initial engagement, indicated by an F value of 403.245 with a significance level of 0.000. The Adjusted R Square value of 0.815 indicates that both variables explain 81.5% of the variance in students' initial engagement. These findings support the Self-Determination Theory, suggesting that students' engagement in organizations is influenced by the interaction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
