Abstract

Empathy is one of the essential character values that should be developed from the elementary school level, as it enables students to understand, appreciate, and respond positively to the feelings and needs of others. However, some students still demonstrate low levels of empathy, including limited concern for peers, inadequate cooperation, and low sensitivity toward others' difficulties. This study aimed to analyze the development of students' empathetic character through the implementation of the 5S Program (Smile, Greeting, Courtesy, and Politeness) among fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Sukaresmi. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving the principal, the fourth-grade teacher, and fourth-grade students as research participants. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data trustworthiness was established through source and technique triangulation. The findings revealed that the implementation of the 5S Program contributed to the development of students' empathetic character through the enhancement of cognitive aspects, reflected in students' ability to understand others' perspectives; affective aspects, reflected in caring attitudes and emotional sensitivity toward peers; and motoric aspects, reflected in helping behaviors, respect, cooperation, and polite social interactions. The development of empathetic character was supported by teachers' role modeling, school culture, and parental involvement, while differences in students' individual characteristics and external environmental influences became the main challenges in strengthening empathy.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Augmented Reality (AR) on improving the understanding of Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) concepts among fifth-grade students at MI Ciomas. The background of this study was the low level of students' conceptual understanding caused by teacher-centered learning and the limited use of interactive learning media. This research employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental method with a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The research subjects consisted of 22 fifth-grade students selected using saturated sampling. Data were collected through essay tests that had been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality testing, and the Paired Sample t-test. The results showed that the average pretest score was 47.41, while the average posttest score increased to 84.50 after the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by Augmented Reality. The normality test indicated that both pretest and posttest data were normally distributed. Furthermore, the Paired Sample t-test yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. These findings demonstrate that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by Augmented Reality has a significant positive effect on improving students' understanding of IPAS concepts. Therefore, the integration of Problem Based Learning and Augmented Reality can serve as an innovative and effective learning strategy to enhance conceptual understanding in elementary school science education.

Abstract

Early reading ability is a basic skill that must be mastered by elementary school students as a foundation for acquiring various knowledge at the next level of education. However, there are still students who experience difficulties in early reading so that learning methods are needed that can improve these abilities. This study aims to determine the effect of multisensory learning methods on early reading ability in the Indonesian language subject of second-grade students of Cibeureum State Elementary School. This study uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method and a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research sample consisted of 28 second-grade students of Cibeureum State Elementary School who were determined using Purposive Sampling Technique. Data collection was carried out through an early reading ability test given before treatment (pretest) and after treatment (posttest). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and the Paired Sample t-Test hypothesis test. The results showed that the average pretest score of early reading ability was 58.21, while the average posttest score was 85.18. There was an average increase of 26.97 or 46.34% after the implementation of the multisensory learning method. The results of the normality test showed that the pretest and posttest data were normally distributed with significance values of 0.135 and 0.089, respectively (p > 0.05). Furthermore, the results of the Paired Sample t-Test showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), so the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the multisensory learning method has a significant effect on the beginning reading ability of second-grade students of Cibeureum State Elementary School. The multisensory learning method has been proven effective in improving beginning reading ability through the involvement of various senses, namely visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile in the learning process.
