Abstract

The ability to recognize letters and words is a basic skill that learners must master as a prerequisite for learning to read. However, learners in the Package A Equivalency Program at PKBM Al-Manar still have difficulties recognizing letters and words, which affects their early reading skills. This study aims to describe learners' ability to recognize letters and words as well as the implementation of the VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Tactile) multisensory method in overcoming these difficulties. The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research informants consist of one tutor and three learners from the Package A Equivalency Program. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document studies, and then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. Research results show that the implementation of the VAKT method through visual stimulation using flashcards, auditory stimulation using A–Z letter learning videos, kinesthetic stimulation using tracing worksheets, and tactile stimulation using letter and word snakes-and-ladders games can help learners recognize letter shapes, differentiate between letters, connect letters with sounds, and recognize simple words. In addition, the VAKT method increases learners’ attention, participation, and motivation during the learning process. Therefore, the VAKT multisensory method can be an effective alternative for overcoming difficulties in letter and word recognition in the Package A Equivalency Program.
