Abstract

Adolescents are a group that is vulnerable to experiencing difficulties in emotional regulation, because these abilities are still developing. This condition is indicated by difficulties controlling emotions, school truancy, and a tendency to withdraw from social interactions. These circumstances may become more complex in adolescents raised by grandparenting, given the different caregiving dynamics compared to adolescents raised by their parents. Therefore, intervention that can help improve emotional regulation abilities in a more adaptive way are needed. One approach that can be used is acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of ACT in improving emotional regulation in adolescents raised by grandparenting. This study used a quantitative method with quasi-experimental one group pretest posttest design, with subjects selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used was the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), which consisted of eight items rated on a 7-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed a descriptive increase in emotion-regulation scores. However, the Wilcoxon test yielded Z= -1.095 with significance p=0.273 (p>0.05), indicating no significant difference in scores before and after the intervention.
