Abstract

The low learning outcomes in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) among third-grade students at SDN 19 Sitiung indicate the need for a learning method that provides direct learning experiences. This study aimed to determine the effect of the experimental method on students’ IPAS learning outcomes. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental design in the form of a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 31 third-grade students selected through saturated sampling. The research instrument was a multiple-choice learning outcome test administered before and after the treatment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The results showed that the mean pretest score of 61.94 increased to 78.32 in the posttest, with a mean difference of 16.39 points. The paired sample t-test result indicated t(30) = 14.08 and p < 0.001, showing a significant difference between students’ learning outcomes before and after the implementation of the experimental method. These findings suggest that the experimental method positively affects IPAS learning outcomes by enabling students to observe, conduct trials, verify concepts, and draw conclusions directly. Therefore, the experimental method can be considered an effective alternative learning method for improving IPAS learning outcomes in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of beginning reading skills among third-grade students at SDN 04 Koto Baru. Some students experienced difficulties in recognizing letters, reading syllables, words, and simple sentences, as well as understanding the content of reading texts. In addition, the learning process was still dominated by the lecture method and had not optimally utilized engaging instructional media, resulting in low student participation and motivation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of using picture word card media on the beginning reading skills of third-grade students at SDN 04 Koto Baru.This study employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental Design with a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The population and sample consisted of all 24 third-grade students of SDN 04 Koto Baru selected through a saturated sampling technique. The research instruments included a beginning reading test, a questionnaire, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and the Paired Sample t-Test with the assistance of SPSS software.The results indicated that the students' beginning reading skills improved after the implementation of picture word card media. The hypothesis testing showed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was less than 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of picture word card media has a significant effect on the beginning reading skills of third-grade students at SDN 04 Koto Baru. This instructional media was proven to improve students' participation, learning motivation, and reading achievement, making it a suitable alternative for teaching Indonesian language, particularly in improving beginning reading skills in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low beginning reading ability of second-grade students at SDN 04 Koto Baru. This condition was indicated by the large number of students who experienced difficulties in recognizing words, reading simple sentences, and actively participating in Indonesian language learning activities. One of the efforts that can be made to overcome these problems is by implementing the Scramble type cooperative learning model assisted by Flash Card media, which is able to create an active, interesting, and enjoyable learning atmosphere. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Scramble type cooperative learning model assisted by Flash Cards on the beginning reading ability of second-grade students at SDN 04 Koto Baru. This research employed a quantitative approach with an experimental research type using a Pre-Experimental Design in the form of a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The population as well as the sample of this study consisted of all second-grade students at SDN 04 Koto Baru, totaling 17 students. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, and observations. Data analysis was conducted through normality testing and hypothesis testing using appropriate statistical tests. The results of the study are expected to show that the implementation of the Scramble type cooperative learning model assisted by Flash Cards has a positive effect on students' beginning reading ability.
