Abstract

This cross-sectional correlational study examined the association between smartphone addiction and learning motivation among adolescents attending Pasraman Tirta Bhuana, a nonformal Hindu religious education institution in Bekasi, Indonesia. The accessible population comprised 223 students aged 12-18 years, and 205 complete responses were included in the analysis (91.9% of the population). Smartphone-addiction symptoms were measured using the 21-item Indonesian modification of the Smartphone Addiction Scale, while learning motivation was assessed with a 24-item questionnaire organized around intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation. Preliminary instrument evaluation yielded Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .842 and .883, respectively. After residual normality, linearity, and homoscedasticity checks, simple linear regression showed a significant inverse association between smartphone-addiction and learning-motivation scores (B = −0.334; R = 0.525; R² = 0.276; p < 0.05). Thus, higher smartphone-addiction scores were associated with lower learning motivation, and the model accounted for 27.6% of the observed variance. Self-Determination Theory provides a plausible interpretive framework, although autonomy, competence, and relatedness were not measured directly. The findings support context-sensitive digital self-regulation strategies and longitudinal research rather than causal conclusions from cross-sectional data.
