Abstract

Hypertension is an elevation in blood pressure that may lead to complications, including headache, which can impair comfort and daily activities. Autogenic relaxation is a non-pharmacological intervention that may help control pain by promoting the body’s relaxation response. This case study aimed to describe changes in headache intensity following autogenic relaxation therapy in patients with hypertension at dr. Esnawan Antariksa Air Force Hospital, Jakarta. A descriptive case study design with a nursing care approach was applied to two hypertensive patients experiencing moderate headache. The intervention was administered for 10–15 minutes once daily for three consecutive days. Pain intensity was assessed before and after the intervention using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), while data were collected through assessment, observation, pain measurement, and documentation. The results showed that the pain score of Subject A decreased from 6 to 3, whereas Subject B decreased from 5 to 1. Pain reduction was accompanied by greater relaxation, reduced muscle tension, and improvement in headache complaints. Autogenic relaxation therapy demonstrated potential as a complementary nursing intervention for hypertensive patients with headache. However, these findings were limited to two subjects and cannot be generalized as evidence of effectiveness in a broader population.
