Abstract

This study analyzes the role of women working in the traditional tobacco processing sector in Lampeji Village, Mumbulsari Subdistrict, Jember Regency, as a strategy for family economic survival during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2023). The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a multidimensional crisis that has impacted various sectors, including agriculture and tobacco farming. Using historical methodology with a qualitative approach as the primary framework and a quantitative approach as a supplement, this study examines the transformation of women’s roles in coping with the crisis. Data collection was conducted through document analysis—including workers’ payroll records, data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and relevant archives—as well as semi-structured in-depth interviews with six informants: warehouse owners, foremen, payroll administrators, permanent workers, and seasonal laborers. Field observations were also conducted to corroborate the data obtained. The results show that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in household income and job losses, prompting women to work in traditional tobacco warehouses to meet domestic needs. Women juggled dual roles as homemakers and supplementary breadwinners through adaptive strategies such as diversifying income sources, negotiating domestic roles with their partners, leveraging social networks, and practicing strict financial management.
