Abstract

Basic Electronics and Embedded System laboratories are vital for technical education but pose understudied occupational hazards. This study systematically identifies, assesses, and controls risks in the Basic Electronics and Embedded System Design Laboratory at Fablab President University using direct observation, interviews, and documentation review. It identified 18 hazards across 8 activities, categorized into 6 types: electrical (most dominant, 7 occurrences), mechanical, fire/explosion, extreme temperature, noise/vibration, and natural hazards especially from energized circuits and high-voltage work. A 4×4 risk matrix revealed 5 High Risk and 2 Extreme Risk scenarios (max value 12 from short circuits), with incidental inspections proving inadequate. Applying the hierarchy of controls LOTO, insulated tools, RCDs, barriers, layout improvements, and training—reduced average risk from 9 to 4.29, eliminating all high/extreme levels. These findings validate proactive HIRAC for enhancing OHS, offering a replicable model for electronics labs.
