Abstract

Quality public space serves as a crucial indicator of a city's social health; however, physical design often fails to guarantee the sustainability of activities within it. The phenomenon at Balai Buntar, Bengkulu City, demonstrates a transformation from neutral space into a meaningful "place" through dynamic repetitive community activities. This research aims to identify patterns of community activity and analyze their contribution to the formation of placemaking in the area. The method employed is descriptive qualitative with a behavior mapping approach, including place-centered and person-centered mapping techniques during weekdays, weekends, and specific events. The results indicate that placemaking is formed through the integration of recreational activities, micro-economics, and passive social interactions that are multi-temporal. The originality of this research lies in the affirmation that public space quality is fundamentally shaped by human activity rather than mere physical design, through tactical urbanism where the community independently redefines spatial functions. The research contribution provides implications for urban planners in Bengkulu to implement community-centered arrangements to maintain social and economic vitality while strengthening social capital through natural surveillance.
