Abstract

Wood sanding dust generated by the furniture industry has significant potential as a sustainable raw material for interior composite materials. However, its application remains limited compared with wood flour and wood particles, while its ultra-fine particle size is expected to affect the composite formation process. This study investigated the early-stage formation of composites made from wood sanding dust using epoxy resin and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc). An exploratory experimental method with a qualitative descriptive approach was employed by producing three specimens using two adhesive systems and two application methods. The specimens were evaluated based on bond quality, adhesive penetration, curing performance, specimen integrity, and surface morphology. The results showed that neither epoxy resin nor PVAc produced a structurally stable composite under the initial formulation. The ultra-fine particles increased the specific surface area while limiting adhesive penetration and continuous bondline formation, resulting in inadequate interparticle bonding. These findings indicate that wood sanding dust requires a different adhesive formulation and fabrication approach from conventional wood flour-based composites. This study provides preliminary insights into the composite formation mechanism of wood sanding dust and supports the development of more sustainable composite materials for interior applications.

Abstract

Traditional halls serve social, ceremonial, and institutional activities while representing cultural identity. In interior design, cultural character emerges through relationships among spatial organization, space-defining elements, materials, colour, ornamentation, and environmental qualities. The objective of this study is to analyse the Neo-Vernacular character of the Riau Malay Traditional Hall interior and explain how its interior elements represent Malay cultural identity within contemporary use. The research applies a descriptive qualitative case-study approach. Data were obtained through field observation, visual documentation, and literature review, then analysed through identification, classification, interpretation, and synthesis. Five dimensions guide the analysis: spatial organization, space-defining elements, visual identity, materiality and atmosphere, and environmental-functional response. The findings show that Malay identity is expressed through spatial hierarchy, colour, decorative elements, openings, material expression, and differentiated functions, with varying levels of integration across rooms. The study contributes an interior-system reading of Neo-Vernacular design that connects spatial, visual, material, environmental, and functional dimensions for analysing actively used culture-based buildings.
