Abstract

Traditional halls serve social, ceremonial, and institutional activities while representing cultural identity. In interior design, cultural character emerges through relationships among spatial organization, space-defining elements, materials, colour, ornamentation, and environmental qualities. The objective of this study is to analyse the Neo-Vernacular character of the Riau Malay Traditional Hall interior and explain how its interior elements represent Malay cultural identity within contemporary use. The research applies a descriptive qualitative case-study approach. Data were obtained through field observation, visual documentation, and literature review, then analysed through identification, classification, interpretation, and synthesis. Five dimensions guide the analysis: spatial organization, space-defining elements, visual identity, materiality and atmosphere, and environmental-functional response. The findings show that Malay identity is expressed through spatial hierarchy, colour, decorative elements, openings, material expression, and differentiated functions, with varying levels of integration across rooms. The study contributes an interior-system reading of Neo-Vernacular design that connects spatial, visual, material, environmental, and functional dimensions for analysing actively used culture-based buildings.
