Abstract

Conventional basketball instruction often faces challenges, such as students finding it difficult to control a standard ball, which leads to a decline in motivation and makes the teaching of basic motor skills such as the chest passless effective. This problem is exacerbated by a lack of appropriate and contextual teaching materials that can actively engage students. This study aims to determine the effect of a modified rubber ball on students’ ability to perform a basketball chest pass. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental, two-group pretest-posttest design. It involved 40 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 2 Sukatani, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group using cluster random sampling over eight sessions. Data analysis involved descriptive analysis, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the homogeneity test, and the paired-sample t-test using SPSS version 25. The results showed a significant improvement in chest pass ability in the experimental group compared to the control group. The mean score of the experimental group increased substantially from 51.30 (pre-test) to 81.75 (post-test), while the control group showed a smaller increase from 46.20 to 63.80. This indicates that the use of a rubber ball significantly improved students chest pass skills.
