Abstract

The phenomenon of student dropout is generally associated with financial difficulties. However, some individuals decide to discontinue their studies despite having adequate family financial conditions, indicating that such decisions are more strongly influenced by psychological, academic, and social factors. This study aims to explore the experience of family support among early adults who decided to drop out of higher education without financial constraints. This research employed a qualitative approach using Moustakas' (1994) transcendental phenomenological design. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of individuals aged 18–25 years who had experienced undergraduate dropout, whose decision was not primarily caused by financial problems, and who received support from their families. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Moustakas' phenomenological analysis procedures. The findings revealed four major themes: (1) dropout as an experience initially faced alone, (2) family acceptance that developed through a process of emotional adaptation, (3) family support perceived through everyday care and attention, and (4) family support that helped individuals rebuild hope after dropping out. The findings indicate that family support is perceived not through the amount of material assistance provided, but through the experience of being accepted, trusted, and continuously treated as a valued member of the family. Such support plays a significant role in facilitating psychological recovery and post-dropout adaptation. Keywords: family support, dropout, early adulthood, phenomenology, psychological recovery.
