This study aims to analyze the effect of income on fishermen's welfare with competence as an intervening variable in Tanjung Nyiur Marabatuan Village, Pulau Sembilan District, Kotabaru Regency. The primary focus of this study is to examine the effect of income on fishermen's welfare, the effect of income on competence, the effect of competence on fishermen's welfare, and the mediating role of competence in the relationship between income and fishermen's welfare. This study employed a quantitative approach with an associative research design. The population consisted of all fishermen in Tanjung Nyiur Marabatuan Village, Pulau Sembilan District, Kotabaru Regency. The sampling technique used was probability sampling based on the characteristics of the research population. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to 77 respondents and analyzed using the Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method with the assistance of SmartPLS 4 software to examine both direct and indirect effects among the variables. The results indicate that income has a positive and significant effect on fishermen's welfare. Income also has a positive and significant effect on fishermen's competence. Furthermore, competence has a positive and significant effect on fishermen's welfare. The indirect effect analysis reveals that competence significantly mediates the relationship between income and fishermen's welfare. These findings indicate that higher income, accompanied by improved competence, contributes more substantially to enhancing fishermen's welfare. Therefore, competence plays an important role in strengthening the relationship between income and fishermen's welfare.
