Abstract

Moral deviance among religious figures demonstrates that religious identity does not necessarily correspond to consistent moral conduct. This study aims to analyze the relationship between extrinsic religiosity and moral hypocrisy among religious figures from the perspective of the Psychology of Religion. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines by examining scholarly articles retrieved from Google Scholar, Scopus, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect, and Taylor & Francis Online, published between 2015 and 2025. The findings indicate that extrinsic religiosity tends to instrumentalize religion as a means of social legitimation and moral image construction rather than fostering the profound internalization of ethical values. Furthermore, moral hypocrisy is shaped by psychological mechanisms such as cognitive dissonance, moral licensing, and moral disengagement, which enable individuals to preserve a religious self-image despite engaging in behaviors that are inconsistent with their professed moral values. These findings demonstrate that the relationship between religiosity and morality is complex and multidimensional, shaped by psychological processes, social identity, and the dynamics of religious life within society.
