Abstract

The utilization of household organic waste as liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) represents an effort to support urban food security and environmental management. This study aims to minimize waste and enhance the knowledge and skills of the Kampoeng Pintar community in processing catfish wastewater and onion peels into LOF, as well as applying it to mustard cultivation to support SDGs 2 and 12. The methods included mentoring and LOF production with pH and nutrient content analysis, followed by demonstration of LOF application on mustard plants using three concentrations: P0 (AB Mix), P1 (LOF 20 mL/L), and P2 (LOF 30 mL/L), each with three repetitions. Plant growth parameters included height, leaf number, and fresh weight. Data were analyzed descriptively using mean and standard deviation. The results showed improved community knowledge and skills in waste processing. The LOF had a pH of 3.8, and the nutrient contents of N, P, K, Fe, and organic C did not meet the minimum standard of the Ministry of Agriculture Decree No. 261/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019, while K content and C/N ratio met the standard. The P2 treatment produced the best plant growth. This approach supports SDGs 2 and 12 by increasing mustard productivity and utilizing organic waste.

Abstract

The high volume of organic waste generated in urban areas calls for effective and sustainable management solutions. Kampoeng Pintar Oase Surabaya still relies on the commercial bioactivator EM4, which is relatively unaffordable; therefore, an environmentally friendly local bioactivator alternative is required. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of local microorganisms (MOL) derived from rotten tempeh and stale rice on composting duration and compost quality. MOL was produced by fermenting rotten tempeh, stale rice, and sugarcane molasses for 14 days. Composting was then conducted using EM4 and MOL treatments, each with three replicates. Composting duration and physicochemical characteristics were analysed descriptively based on laboratory results from BSPJI Surabaya. The results of the study showed that rotten tempeh and stale rice MOL accelerated the composting process to an average of 23 days, compared to 27 days for EM4. The compost produced was dark brown in colour, had an earthy aroma, and contained 1.13% N, 0.48% P, and 6.95% K. The total N+P+K content of 8.56% indicates that the compost meets the minimum requirements for solid organic fertiliser as stipulated in Ministry of Agriculture Regulation No. 01 of 2019.

Abstract

Suboptimal management of household kitchen waste remains an environmental issue in urban communities, including in Kampoeng Pintar Oase Tembokgede, Surabaya. This situation underscores the need for simple and sustainable methods of utilizing organic waste that align with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on responsible consumption and production. This community service activity was carried out in collaboration with the Kampoeng Pintar Oase Tembokgede Surabaya community through education and practical training on the production of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) made from kitchen waste and rotten tempeh. The activity methods included outreach on household organic waste management, training on POC production, and a demonstration of POC application on Brazilian spinach (Alternanthera sissoo) as part of urban farming activities within the community. The activity was evaluated through observations of plant growth as well as community response and participation in utilizing organic waste. The results of the activity showed that the POC produced contained the nutrients N, P, K, and organic C with a C/N ratio of 10.7, which is suitable for use as a simple organic fertilizer. POC application improved Brazilian spinach growth and enhanced the community’s skills in converting kitchen waste into useful products.
