Abstract

This study aims to explore the thought of KH. As’ad Syamsul Arifin within the framework of social Sufism as a foundation for ethical conduct and collective action. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach based on library research, this study examines KH. As’ad’s written works and intellectual legacy, particularly Risalah At-Tauhid and Syair Aqaid Saeket. The findings demonstrate that KH. As’ad integrated spiritual values, including tawhid, zuhd, and khidmah, into social and national movements. Accordingly, Sufism was understood not merely as a path toward individual piety, but also as a transformative force within society. His conception of tawhid emphasises liberation from worldly domination, while zuhd is directed toward the development of inner awareness without diminishing social productivity and responsibility. Meanwhile, the concept of khidmah reinforces an ethical commitment to serving the Muslim community. These findings suggest that KH. As’ad’s thought may serve as a model of contextual Sufism that is firmly grounded in local traditions while remaining responsive to contemporary social and national dynamics. From his perspective, Sufism does not represent a retreat from worldly affairs; rather, it constitutes active engagement in shaping society through both spiritual and social transformation.
