Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concepts of khauf and raja’ in Imam Al-Ghazali's thought and their relevance to the formation of self-control in modern life. The study uses a qualitative approach with library research. The main source of the study is the book Minhajul ‘Abidin by Imam Al-Ghazali, supported by various scientific literature on Sufism, Islamic psychology, and self-control. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques through the process of identifying, interpreting, and synthesizing concepts related to khauf, raja’, and self-control. The results show that khauf functions as a self-control mechanism that originates from spiritual awareness of supervision and accountability before God. This concept encourages individuals to control their desires, increase self-reflection, and form a strong moral awareness. Meanwhile, raja’ acts as a motivational force that fosters optimism, psychological resilience, and a spirit of self-improvement through hope in God's grace. This study found that the balance between khauf and raja’ forms a comprehensive pattern of self-control because it integrates spiritual, moral, and psychological dimensions simultaneously. Therefore, the concept of khauf and raja’ in Imam Al-Ghazali's thinking has significant relevance as a basis for strengthening self-control in facing various moral, emotional, and social challenges in the modern era
