Abstract

Young leachate from the inlet zone of Muara Fajar Landfill is characterized by high acidity (pH 5.5) and pollutant load, posing risks of heavy metal mobilization into groundwater. This study evaluates the performance of alkali-activated duck eggshell biosorbent as a neutralizing and clarifying agent for acidogenic leachate. A batch system was employed with varying contact times (0–120 mins), 2% (w/v) adsorbent dosage, and 175 rpm agitation. Results showed the biosorbent effectively increased leachate pH from 5.5 to 6.6, complying with MoEF Regulation No. 59/2016 standards. Turbidity decreased by 37% (72.4 to 45.6 NTU) at the optimum time of 60 minutes. Kinetic analysis fitted the Pseudo-Second Order model (R2= 0.9557) with a maximum adsorption capacity (qe) of 1.49 NTU.L/g and rate constant (k2) of 0.041 g/NTU.min, indicating dominant chemisorption mechanisms. Duck eggshell waste shows potential as an economical, eco-friendly pre-treatment for acidic leachate.
