Abstract

This research explores the connection between the sasi culture, a local wisdom of the Kei Islands community in Southeast Maluku, and mathematical concepts. Sasi is a natural resource management system based on the Larvul Ngabal customary law, aimed at maintaining environmental sustainability through harvesting bans on certain resources for specific time periods. Although not formally recognized, sasi practices contain elements of ethnomathematics—mathematics embedded in cultural context. This exploration found that sasi reflects mathematical concepts, including time, measurement, classification, and simple mathematical modeling for resource optimization. The article aims to describe and analyze how mathematical concepts are integrated into sasi practices, while highlighting the potential of ethnomathematics as a relevant bridge in contextual mathematics learning. Findings show that sasi practices implicitly contain at least four main mathematical concepts: (1) concepts of time and traditional calendars reflecting periodicity and estimation; (2) measurement and classification of resources using non-standard units; (3) geometry and spatiality in territorial boundary determination; and (4) simple mathematical modeling in sustainable resource management.
