Abstract

This study examines the various changes involved in the screen adaptation (ecranisation) of Laksmi Pamuntjak’s novel Aruna dan Lidahnya into the film of the same name directed by Edwin. This study is significant because the process of adapting a novel into a film entails not merely transferring the story but also transforming various narrative elements to suit the characteristics of the film medium. The objective of this research is to describe the diverse forms of change that occurred during this screen adaptation process. A qualitative descriptive method was employed. The data consisted of excerpts from the novel and scenes from the film that demonstrated changes in characters, plot, and setting. Data were collected using reading, viewing, and note-taking techniques, and subsequently analyzed by comparing elements found in both the novel and the film. The results indicate that these varied changes were achieved through character modifications, plot reordering, and setting adjustments, all while preserving the story's core. These changes were implemented to enhance storytelling effectiveness, strengthen visualization, and accommodate the film's runtime. The findings demonstrate that such varied changes serve as an adaptation strategy, allowing the film to retain the novel's essence while offering a distinct experience for the audience.
