Abstract

Pop songs have become a popular and creative alternative for enhancing students' listening skills in English learning. This study investigates students’ voices on using English pop songs as creative tools to improve their listening abilities and examines the challenges they encounter throughout the process. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research utilized questionnaires and interviews with students at an Indonesian state Islamic university. The findings indicate that most students regard English pop songs as creative learning tool may improve the listening skills; support the vocabulary and pronunciation development; make the learning experience more enjoyable; and improve the mood and motivation. Nonetheless, students report several challenges during their creative learning by using English pop songs, such as keeping up with fast-paced lyrics; difficult lyric structures; and unfamiliar cultural part of lyric. The study confirms that English pop songs are a valuable and creative tool for listening practice, especially when combined with appropriate teaching strategies such as reading lyrics, repeated listening, and focusing on clear pronunciation in the selected song.
