Abstract

This study examines the use of deixis in the dialogues of the Indonesian film Pabrik Gula (Sugar Factory, 2025) directed by Awi Suryadi using a pragmatic approach. The research aims to describe the forms and distribution of exophoric deixis (person, temporal, locative, social) and endophoric deixis (anaphora and cataphora) in character utterances. A qualitative-descriptive method was applied using observation and note-taking techniques. The data source is the 2-hour 12-minute film released on March 31, 2025. The study identified 134 deictic expressions distributed as follows: person deixis (83 tokens), temporal deixis (13 tokens), locative deixis (21 tokens), social deixis (11 tokens), and endophoric deixis (6 tokens). First-person singular deixis dominated with 32 occurrences, reflecting high levels of personal interaction among characters. Social deixis in the form of honorific address forms such as Mbah, Mas, and Bu indicates a clear social hierarchy within the sugar factory worker community. These findings reinforce the theory that film, as a verbal-visual communication medium, is rich with deictic expressions that reflect social and cultural context.
