Abstract

The increase in the number of older adults in Indonesia has been accompanied by a high incidence of diabetes, a chronic disease that requires serious management through adherence to treatment, dietary habits that are often poorly understood, and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle among older adults. Managing this disease becomes more complex due to the weakening of bodily organs and changes in psychological conditions that can affect how older adults respond to symptoms and treatment. This study aims to describe the stages of illness behavior according to Edward Suchman’s theory, as well as the level of understanding that older adults have regarding diabetes at the Gunungpati Senior Citizens’ Home in Semarang. To this end, a qualitative descriptive approach was used, with data collected through in depth interviews. The results show that some older adults view diabetes symptoms as a normal part of aging, leading them to delay seeking help, whereas those with a good understanding of the condition tend to progress through the stages of illness behavior appropriately and adhere to their treatment. In conclusion, the level of understanding is a key determinant of older adults’ illness behavior. Continuous health education and intensive support are necessary to improve adherence and prevent the risk of more severe complications.
